The healthcare revenue cycle has seen major trend upheaval lately, many of which have significant impact on how revenue cycle leaders should approach decisions around medical billing services in the USA.
Becker’s Healthcare has highlighted eight key trends, and one group in particular is a significant point of growth and adaptation for providers [1]. This is the category of “New Work Models”. It is a look at the shift in how healthcare is delivered and how those behind the scenes get their work done. The three trends Becker’s highlights are:
- Value-based care
- Remote work
- Telehealth
If you look deeply at all three, the connecting point is a move away from the status quo in order to find new ways to provide value. For value-based care, this means rewarding providers for outcomes instead of simply performing services. In remote work, it translates to rewarding valuable staff with flexibility to retain institutional knowledge and key talent. And with telehealth, it means giving both providers and patients valuable flexibility while rethinking reimbursement and care delivery.
This type of shift is at the heart of the decision to outsource, and the majority of providers understand the potential. Almost eight out of ten hospital executives say they use revenue cycle outsourcing, a full seven out of 10 are satisfied with their partnerships [2]. Increasing payer contract complexity, the organizational upset of remote work, and the opaque costs of telemedicine all challenge the status quo – opening up new opportunities to discover the value that a third-party outsourcing partner can provide in supporting medical billing services in the USA. This is because it is incredibly difficult to take advantage of the many possibilities emerging in new work models without the insight into a broad range of provider successes, failures, strategies, and tactics.
